I take great pleasure in announcing that Shaylen Hardy will be InterVarsity’s next National Director of Black Campus Ministries. I am personally excited to work with someone who has such a deep heart for ministry and Black students, has an indomitable drive, and is organizational/systems savvy. Like her predecessor Charlene Brown, she will make our Focused Ministries team better, and will make me better!
Shaylen has deep roots in the Black church as it has been foundational in her formation throughout her life. As a student leader and then as a Campus Staff Minister, she played a key role growing the Collegiate, Black, and Christian chapter at Western Michigan University and subsequently planted CBC at Michigan State. Over her ten years of ministry in the Great Lakes East region, she has been the key BCM staff person in expanding BCM student participation from around 200 to well over 600. Cofounding GLE’s BCM student conference Ignite in 2010, Shaylen helped develop that conference from 40 participants into the nation’s largest BCM student conference at over 400. She has also worked to grow the BCM staff team in GLE from two Black staff to 15 staff today. A graduate of the BCM Daniel Project, Shaylen most recently served as Associate National Director of BCM and a member of the BCM Leading Servants team.
In addition to leading undergrad BCM work, Shaylen has also planted Black Scholars and Professionals (GFM), and LaFe. She has served as emcee at Urbana 15 and will also emcee Urbana 18. Shaylen is an all-decade D-I athlete and also coached D-I volleyball. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master of Arts in communication. Shaylen and her husband, Malcomb Hardy, live in Lansing, Michigan.
